Preparing Your Ford for Southwest Iowa Winters: A Local Mechanic’s Guide

If you’ve lived in Montgomery County or the surrounding areas for more than a year, you know that Southwest Iowa winters can be unpredictable. From sudden ice storms to deep snowdrifts on rural county roads, driving safely requires more than just caution—it requires a vehicle that is properly prepared.
At TNT Ford in Red Oak, our certified technicians see the toll that sub-zero temperatures and road salt can take on vehicles. To ensure your Ford F-150, Explorer, or Bronco is ready for whatever January throws at it, we’ve put together this comprehensive winterization guide.
1. Check Your Battery’s Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
When temperatures drop below freezing, your battery’s internal chemical reactions slow down. A battery that worked fine in July might struggle to turn over your engine in December. Ford vehicles require a specific amount of Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) to start efficiently in the cold. We highly recommend having your battery load-tested before the first frost. If your battery is older than three years, it may be time for a Motorcraft® replacement.
2. Inspect Tire Tread and Pressure
Navigating the rolling hills and gravel roads outside of Shenandoah or Clarinda in the snow requires proper traction. Check your tires using the “penny test”—if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head when inserting a penny upside down into the tread, it’s time for new tires. Additionally, remember that tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Keep an eye on your Ford’s TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) dashboard light and inflate your tires to the recommended PSI located on your driver-side door jamb.
3. Optimize Your Fluids for Sub-Zero Temperatures
Summer windshield washer fluid will freeze directly onto your windshield on a cold Iowa morning, completely obscuring your vision. Swap it out for a winter-grade fluid rated for -20°F or lower. Just as importantly, have your engine coolant (antifreeze) mixture checked. A proper 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is essential to prevent your engine block from freezing and cracking.
4. Prepare a Winter Emergency Kit
Whether you’re commuting to Omaha or just driving across Red Oak, you should always keep a winter survival kit in your trunk or truck bed. We recommend packing:
- A sturdy ice scraper and snow brush
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
- A heavy blanket, gloves, and a warm hat
- A small shovel and a bag of sand or non-clumping kitty litter for traction
Stay Safe This Winter Taking proactive steps in the fall can save you from a stressful breakdown in the dead of winter. If you aren’t comfortable checking these components yourself, schedule a winter readiness inspection with our factory-trained service team at TNT Ford.
